Practical Magic Practical Magic is an underrated film with an engaging A-list cast — an uplifting blend of opposites with magical moments and life lessons.

This movie is about the bond between sisters and trust within a multi-generational family; about finding love; about strong women dealing with being different; as well as classic good versus evil.

Upon release the studio marketing department couldn't decide which audience it was aiming for, as witnessed by three different and rather sappy trailers. (The clips above are far more representative!) The confusion spread and the film did not click with critics stymied by the film's diverse elements of family drama, comedy, romance, mystery and the culture of "good" witches.

Real life audiences disagreed with the critics. 1,600 Amazon reviewers gave it 4.5 out of 5.0 stars. 73% of RT viewers rated it 3.5 or higher out of 5.0 and 70% of 56,000 IMDB users rated it from 6.0 - 10.0.

Practical Magic has some flaws. But, its strong points prevail and it is a cult favorite, emerging as a popular and entertaining Halloween watch for adults as well as families with older kids. Rated PG-13, it is not a slasher film – blood and gore lovers should look elsewhere.

CAST / PRODUCTION

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are great as two sisters in this film, Sally a widow with two daughters and free-wheeling redhead Gillian. Their on-screen chemistry will remind you of how close-knit siblings interact in real life. The middle link of three generations of women in the film, they are witches, of the good variety, but labor under a family curse that dooms the men they love.

The men are played by Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall, Elementary, At Play in the Fields of the Lord, Music of the Heart) and Goran Visnjic (The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, The Deep, ER, Welcome to Sarajevo). One, Gary, is nice, the other, Jimmy, is not.

Stockard Channing (Grease, Six Degrees of Separation, First Wives Club, The West Wing, The Good Wife) and Dianne Wiest (Edward Scissorhands, The Lost Boys, Bullets Over Broadway, Bright Lights Big City) play Frances and Jet, the sisters' aunts. They bring playful humor and endearing wit to their roles and just about steal the film.

Sally's daughters Antonia and Kylie are played by Alexandra Artrip and eleven-year-old Evan Rachel Wood (The Ides of March, Across the Universe, Thirteen, Mildred Pierce and True Blood). Sally's deceased husband was played be Mark Feuerstein, (Woman on Top, What Women Want, The Muse, The West Wing, Ally McBeal). Sally's co-worker Linda is played by popular character actor Margo Martindale (Million Dollar Baby, Beautiful Creatures, The Firm, Secretariat, Dead Man Walking, The Hours).

The action is set in a small town on an island off the coast of Massachussetts, in the aunts' sea-side mansion (gothic but not eerie). It was filmed in the scenic San Juan and Whidby Islands in Washington state.
