Starring William Holden, Kim Novak, Rosalind Russell, Susan Strasberg and Cliff Robertson with a terrific supporting cast. Written by William Inge, directed by Joshua Logan, shot by James Wong Howe assisted by Haskell Wexler. Screenplay by Daniel Taradash, score by George Duning.
A box office and critical success that solidified William Holden's place as top-draw and propelled Kim Novak into stardom, Picnic contained what many consider the most sensual dance scene of the decade. Deftly sidestepping the movie censors, the movie conveyed an aura of sexuality that wowed audiences as the film's female characters, young and old alike, were magnetically drawn to William Holden in the lead role.
Unlike the edited, narrow-aspect pan-and-scan versions shown on TV and the compressed letterbox version on DVD and VOD, CWC will present a limited-edition remastered Technicolor high definition version in full Cinemascope. For you tech types, this is full 2.55:1 ultra wide screen, versus the 1.78:1 and 1.33:1 seen elsewhere. In short, this means you will see the entire content of every frame, exactly as the director intended it to be shown.
James Wong Howe's masterful composition and documentary-style use of CinemaScope is evident throughout, from towering grain silos, to helicopter shots to the riverbank scene below, like a Renoir in motion.
Psychologist Mary Lynn Griswold will join Tim Swallow for discussion after the film. They will talk about the socio-cultural aspects of the film as relate to a small Midwestern town in the 1950s and how the mores and posture of that patriarchal society translate 60 years later.
