CWC's popular annual event returns for the 18th year, bringing ten terrific Animated and Live-Action Academy Award nominees plus bonus animated shorts. COFFEE EMPORIUM will return again this year providing food, tea and coffee drinks in the Memorial Hall ballroom, between the programs on both days.

An aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome gets another chance at motherhood
when one of her dumplings springs to life as a lively, giggly dumpling boy. Mom excitedly welcomes this new bundle of joy into her life, but Dumpling grows quickly, and Mom must come to the bittersweet revelation that nothing stays cute and small forever. This short film from Pixar Animation Studios explores the ups and downs of the parent-child relationship
through the colorful, rich, and tasty lens of the Chinese immigrant community in Canada.

Emily is an elderly woman who lives between two states, the past and the present. She journeys into an inner world, reliving moments from her life. She searches for a connection within her vivid, but fragmented memories.

In this funny short from the Oscar-winning team of Snowden and Fine, five animals meet regularly to discuss their inner angst in a group therapy session led by Dr. Clement, a canine
psychotherapist.

The story of a young boy shuffling between the homes of his recently divorced parents. Surreal, dream-like moments mix with the domestic realities of a broken family in this hand-animated film set in 1980's Toronto.

Luna is a vibrant young Chinese American girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut. From the day she witnesses a rocket launching into space on TV, she is driven to reach for the stars. In the big city, Luna lives with her loving father Chu, who supports her with a humble shoe repair business he runs out of his garage. As Luna grows up, she enters college, dealing with adversity of all kinds in pursuit of her dreams.

A pirate, a monkey and a treasure box walk into a bar ... and set the stage for an amazing animated short film in which a greedy pirate attempts to force his food-obsessed monkey to wish for gold to come out of the magical box.

Our life is like walking on a tightrope. Sometimes we are scared or lost and we lose balance. When we are happy and excited, we forget we walk on a rope. We can even fly! Main characters are girl Luba and her friend Sparrow. Silly Sparrow doesn't know fear. By playing with him Luba forgets she is on a rope.

MadreOscar Nominee Rodrigo Sorogoyen, 2018, Spain, 19 min.
Suspense: A single mother receives a call from her seven-year-old son, on vacation with his father in the French Basque Country. At first the call is a cause for joy, but soon it becomes a nightmare when the child tells her that he is alone, cannot find his father, and a stranger is approaching.
FauveOscar Nominee Jeremy Comte, 2018, Canada, 17 min.
Two boys, looking for adventure near an open pit mine, are drawn into a dangerous situation as they take turns outdoing each other, until their game of one-upmanship spins out of control. The ambient sound and cross-fades of the industrial wasteland build tension and underscore futility.
MargueriteOscar Nominee Marianne Farley, 2018, Canada, 19 min.
An aging woman and her nurse develop a friendship that inspires her to unearth unacknowledged longing, and helps her make peace with her past.
PARENT'S NOTE: "R" rated films are not unusual in the Live Action category. This year, although not formally rated, the last two shorts could easily be rated "R" for implied and actual violence.
Detainmenttalks about a murder. There is no on-screen violence but the content is disturbing. See the NPR comments in the film description below.
The Oscar winner, Skin, has scenes of racially-motivated on-screen violence — not unlike the world we live in today — that propel the plot. This well-made film offers much to think and talk about – see film description below.
DetainmentOscar Nominee Vincent Lambe, 2018, Ireland, 30 min.
Two ten-year-old boys are detained by police under suspicion of abducting and murdering a toddler. A true story based on interview transcripts from the James Bulger case which shocked the world in 1993 and continues to incite public outrage across the UK today.
NPR wrote:
"Compared to the media coverage, "Detainment" is restrained and ruminative, with incredible performances from Ely Solan and Leon Hughes as the killers. Rather than portraying remorseless monsters, Solan and Hughes coat their lines in very childlike mixes of denial, outward aggression, and uncontrollable sorrow. The result is all the more stomach-churning for its recognizable humanity."
Skin OSCAR WINNER Guy Nattiv, 2018, USA/Israel, 20 min.
In a small supermarket in a blue collar town, a black man smiles at a ten-year-old white boy across the checkout aisle. This innocuous moment sends two factions into conflict that ends with ironic retribution.
Gun culture and Neo-Nazi hatred of "the other" is shown mostly from a young boy's perspective, pitting inculcated family values against nascent conscience, with unexpected results.
