    Contemporary Worldwide Advertising Exhibit

As you'll see with the BTAA winners, commercials targeted to other cultures tend to take a different approach - less direct sell, more story telling. This concept is often, but not always, evident in American-made ads intended for other regions, including many from Cincinnati's #1 corporate citizen, Procter & Gamble.

On view in the Carnegie Gallery, CWC is delighted to share select video examples of P&G worldwide advertising, including consumer ads targeted to the UK & ECM, China, India, Japan, Argentina, Poland, Puerto Rico, Morocco, Israel and Thailand.

Please take a few minutes before the BTAA screenings to appreciate this collection of distinctive, entertaining and effective work.

    Social Hour & Buffet

    Bring an appetite!
Starting at 6:00 pm each day in the Carnegie's main gallery, Europa Bistro & Cafe will offer some tasty continental delicacies, available for purchase by-the-plate.   For example...

    BTAA

    Fresh from the UK:
Clever, creative shorts ~ the 2010 BTAA winners
from Television, the Web and Cinema.

Join us for a fast-paced evening of funny and often touching vignettes offering great variety and creative content that will keep you guessing.

The British Television Advertising Awards (BTAA) Program is a juried collection of the best made-in-the-UK adverts and Public Service Announcements for television, cinema and the Web. With common themes of misdirection, reverse psychology, a bit of sex and a lot of humor, the 2010 program is highly creative and entertaining.

Why do thousands of people turn out to see the BTAA program when it screens in New York, Los Angeles and a handful of other cities? "It's got something for everyone," says Dean Otto, assistant curator for film and video at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where last year 20,000 patrons attended more than 50 sold-out screenings. "Anglophiles love it for a different look at British culture. But filmgoers in general are interested because of its variety."

When describing the BTAA program's inaugural run at the Detroit Film Theatre, director Elliott Wilhelm said it best: "... in England, TV commercials have long been treated with respect, probably because so many of them treat their viewers with respect. In fact for decades, the BTAA have been among the most prestigious prizes British filmmakers vie for. Established directors, such as Ridley Scott and Alan Parker cut their teeth by selling products with imagination, wit and visual brilliance."

Mr. Wilhelm went on to say, "Part of the fun of this program of British Television Awards is to figure out, while you are watching these little movies, just exactly what product and message they're trying to get across. And very often, you don't know until the very end."

Through our annual Oscar Shorts, ShortsFest and LunaFest programs over the years, Cincinnati World Cinema audiences have come to know and enjoy short films. They especially appreciate the variety and quality content, which are also key elements of the BTAA program, along, of course, with an ample dose of unqiuely British humor.

Most important, the creative BTAA ads and powerful PSAs tell stories - they are literally little movies - often with much longer run times than their American counterparts. To complete the connection between the BTAA and CWC short film programs, both Oscar winning shorts this year (animation and live action) were made by filmmakers working in advertising organizations.

This synergy is quite logical: the current worldwide financial situation, combined with the intense competition for screen time, dictates that filmmakers (especially in the short and documentary genres) derive subsistance from other sources. Overall quality benefits when filmmakers working in the media arts/advertising sectors can apply their skills, creative and production tools and resources to private projects destined for the big screen.

A prime local example comes to mind - the talented folks at Mirepoix Pictures labor at commercial/industrial efforts and in turn are able to make outstanding short films for public consumption. And speaking of local connections, our friends with P&G will be pleased to know that a Procter UK spot for Head and Shoulders is included in the BTAA lineup.

    About the BTAA

BTAA is organized by a not-for-profit company whose shareholders are companies involved with the making of commercials. The Chief Executive of BTAA is Mr. Peter Bigg, to whom Cincinnati World Cinema is indebted - and extends a warm and special thank you - for the opportunity to share this fine program with the people of Greater Cincinnati and the Tri-State area.

The British Television Advertising Awards were created in 1976 and were originally known as the London Television Advertising Awards. The purpose was to recognize and reward the best television commercials made by British advertising agencies and production companies.

As time progressed, the scope of recognition was expanded to include commercials and PSAs directed to cinema, and in recent years, to viral marketing and ambient media/out-of-home environments, (1), (2).

Currently, the event attracts an entry of almost one thousand commercials, and a similar number of people attend the presentation of awards each March. In the near future, congruent with the evolution of the industry, the BTAA will change its identity to the British Arrows to reflect the expanding role of visual media arts in the advertising world.

U.S. showings of the awards began in 1984 at New York's Museum of Modern Art, where each year's BTAA program is added to the Museum's permanent collection. Screenings eventually spread to Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Houston, San Francisco, Cleveland, Portland and Boston. International exhibitions include the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the International Film Festival of Kerala in India.

These screenings have offered an American audience exposure to the originality, wit, and creativity of British advertising as well as showcasing the early work of film directors such as Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Hugh Hudson, and Alan Parker as they were becoming fully-fledged Hollywood directors. The BTAA program screenings have developed an influential reputation in the U.S. for creative excellence, enhanced by public and professional interest that has spawned further screenings across the country.

Along with the Cincinnati World Cinema presention at the Carnegie Arts Center, the 2010 Awards are scheduled to be shown in these U.S. locations: Museum of Modern Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Detroit Institute of Art; Cleveland Museum of Art/Cleveland Cinemateque; North West Film Center, Portland; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Honolulu Academy of Art.

The BTAA associates itself with the Kodak Student Commercial Awards to foster emerging talent in film schools. More information can be found at www.kodak.co.uk/UK/en/motion/students/award.jhtml.
