    FELA!

Click here for online tickets THE SETTING IS "THE AFRIKA SHRINE"  – Fela Kuti's private club in Lagos Nigeria – a raucous after-hours music-and-dance hall, stylistically reproduced with bandstand, corrugated metal walls, graffiti and ropes of bare lightbulbs.

WE'RE ATTENDING ONE OF FELA'S infamous concerts and barely in our seats when the soul-shaking, immersive Afrobeat music pulls us to our feet, daring us to dance along with the undulating line of ladies rhythmically snaking their way onstage.

AS SAHR NGAUJAH (Obie Award winner for his performance as Fela Kuti) follows the dancers onstage and interacts with the house, we know something fantastic is at hand, and audience response is as one with the man who made Afrobeat famous.

AN EXCEPTIONAL, ONE-OF-A-KIND EVENING begins to unfold, with mesmerizing artistry of sound and movement; superb choreography by Bill T. Jones; a rainbow of colors that comprise the costumes and the set. We are part of a pulsating, visceral spectacle that resurrects the life and times of Nigerian musician, rebel and political activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Between musical numbers, Fela talks to the audience, sharing the highs and lows that shaped his persona, including his trip to America and exposure to the Civil Rights Movement that irrevocably altered his mission and life.

BASED ON THE TRUE STORY of a complex, flawed, artistically brilliant man and his music, this is the Broadway production that wowed New York (winning 3 Tonys), now at The Royal National Theatre in London, captured live in high definition and shared with select cinemas around the world. The exclusive CWC/Carnegie presentation is one of only a handful of locations within a 400-mile radius of Cincinnati.

    About AfroBeat

    Afrobeat
is the musical style created by Fela Kuti, a complex fusion of Jazz, Funk, Ghanaian/Nigerian High-life, Yoruba music, rock, call-and-response and rhythms, and traditional West African chants.

Notable influences were colonial church and gospel music from Fela's childhood; Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra from his time in the UK; the music of James Brown; and the native African-style percussion Kuti learned from Hugh Masakela.

    About Fela Kuti

Musician, composer, band leader, political activist, presidential candidate, human rights advocate and vociferous foe of governmental corruption and oppression, Fela Kuti was a unique and ineffable musical and sociopolitical voice of Africa. A champion of the poor and disenfranchised and proponent of Pan-Africanism, Fela was a living legend and inspiration to all in Africa. Upon his death at the age of 58, over one million people attended his funeral procession.

    Welcome to the Carnegie

The Otto M. Budig Theatre in the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center transports the audience to the ornate elegance of the early 1900s. Restored in 2006, improvements include comfortable seating with additional leg room, large movie screen and updated sound system. While the theatre holds 465 patrons, the capacity for cinema is limited to 350 seats on the main floor and center balcony to insure the best sight lines and audience experience.

COME EARLY to socialize and enjoy your favorite spirits or non-alcoholic beverage (ala carte hors d'oeuvres before selected screenings), at the cash bar in the adjacent Gallery reception space. The Carnegie is located at 1028 Scott Blvd., Covington KY 41011 (corner of Scott and Robbins, between 10th and 11th Streets). FREE PARKING on-site and in nearby lots – Parking Map.
