Martha Viehmann
With a PhD from Yale and AB from Dartmouth and educational focus on Literature and Culture, American Studies and writing, Martha Viehmann has taught at the college level at NKU, Xavier, University of Colorado, University of Denver and Sinclair Community College in Dayton.
Throughout her career she has helped students find their way in a variety of courses - English, American Studies, science and literature, history of the U.S. West. About a decade ago while at the University of Denver, she began to include films in her classes and so began to learn more about how movies make meaning.

The Film... "When are you going to find a husband?" is the question of the night for a single Persian woman, unmarried at 28, in this comedy about the perils of being single. Stuck at her younger sister's engagement party and surrounded by meddling friends and family intent on securing her a mate of her own, this reluctant bride spends the evening dodging and weaving a barrage of suitors and romantic setups.
The Director... Shideh Faramand stepped into the spotlight at Sydney's Harmony Film Festival in 2005, winning two awards for her short film In Time. A 2004 graduate of the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Theatre Arts, she performs onstage as well as creating films. Recently, she has spent time in Canada filming a documentary about Native American boys and is in the process of editing this film. In her work behind, and in front of, the camera, Shideh hopes to bring about changes in the way females are often portrayed on screen.

The Film...
Most teenage girls dream of that nice-but-hard-to-get boy. Joppe is no different but faces a unique challenge. This engaging film brings an effervescent approach to its music, cinematography and symbolism to introduce a courageous young person unafraid to stand up for herself and to be who she truly believes she was meant to be.
The Director... Susan Koenen is intrigued by everyday people who are role models. Her films include Laura & Anne 4 Ever, where a 14-year-old girl loses her best friend to leukemia, and The Wild Wild West, about a man who created a special place for underprivileged children in a multicultural neighborhood in the west of Amsterdam. Susan's work has screened at film festivals worldwide, receiving numerous awards.

The Film... A woman dies every 90 seconds from complications of pregnancy and 90% of these deaths are preventable. This brief documentary examines Obstetric Fistula, one of the most common and heartbreaking morbidities resulting from poor maternal health care. By focusing on real women's stories, Every Mother Counts seeks to create a mainstream maternal health movement that improves the lives and well being of mothers worldwide.
The Director... Christy Turlington Burns has established a diverse career as a writer, entrepreneur, spokesperson, model, advocate and now filmmaker. In 2008, inspired by her work with the international humanitarian organization CARE, she embarked on a documentary film project focusing on maternal health worldwide. Her directorial debut, No Woman, No Cry, shares powerful stories of at-risk pregnant women in four parts of the world. Concurrent with its release, Christy launched Every Mother Counts, an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for this important issue. She is currently pursuing a master's degree at Columbia University's School of Public Health.

The Film...
There are moments that have the potential to change a life's course. A handsome man on the subway looks at you from above his book. A woman at the table next to you asks to borrow your salt and pepper. There's a look, a flicker of attraction. You ask for her name, you ask him if he'd like to meet tomorrow for some ice cream. Or you don't. You think about what could have been. Was this "The One"?
Once found on the back pages of local papers, Missed Connections is a forum on Craigslist where those who regret their timidity make appeals to the Ones Who Got Away. The documentary short Missed Connections peers inside these popular online messages-in-a-bottle asking whether love lost can be found again.
The Director... Mary Robertson is a director/producer of non-fiction media who currently develops, directs, and produces documentaries for a wide range of television networks at the production company "Left/Right." In 2010 she completed work producing two hours of This Emotional Life, the highly-rated mini-series which has garnered nine Telly awards and was recently honored with an IDA nomination for Best Limited Series. Other television credits include producing and directing work for PBS's NOVA Science NOW, History Detectives and Current TV. For radio, Mary has produced and reported several segments for public radio's award-winning series This American Life.
Her independent film credits include the documentary short The Bear Hunter, which screened at numerous film festivals including Silverdocs, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives, and the New York Underground Film Festival. Along the way she has been fortunate to collaborate with and learn from some of the best storytellers working today, including: Bill Moyers, Maysles Films, David Grubin Productions, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, Susan Froemke, Deborah Dickson, and Chris Wilcha. Mary studied at Wesleyan University, majoring in film and graduating with honors.

The Film...
Former Saturday Night Live cast member Michaela Watkins stars as a girl with all sorts of image and self-confidence issues who dreams of being a normal girl with a normal life, but is way too neurotic to make anything work. But that doesn't stop her from trying – her latest scheme involves the "Fat-2-Fab Extreme," a tortuous device acquired via TV infomercial that requires "professional extraction!"
The Director... Lake Bell is best known for her acting roles – It's Complicated, No Strings Attached, What Happens in Vegas. Well-received at the Sundance, Aspen and Nantucket festivals, Worst Enemy is her directorial debut.

The Film... When a group of Pacific Islander women start a rugby team in East Palo Alto, California, all they have in mind is getting in shape. But this diverse group of women – who range from teenagers struggling with school, to church-going college students, to mothers of six – find an unexpected sanctuary on the field. Lady Razorbacks shows Fijians, Tongans, and Samoans discovering common ground as they learn the sport they grew up watching their brothers, uncles, and cousins play. In a space where hitting hard and caring for each other are synonymous, they find new ways to express themselves and support one another.
The Director... Laura Green received her degree in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University in 2006. After a year of academic research and work on a short documentary film in Africa, she returned to her native San Francisco to work in filmmaking and post-production. She is currently an M.F.A. candidate in Documentary Film at Standford University. Green, who was raised on video, acknowledged both her anxiety and excitement to shoot Lady Razorbacks on black-and-white 16mm film. "It's a bit intimidating," she said. "Especially when you have low light and a low depth of field the way I did shooting an evening team practice. You don't know what you're going to get." Green got beautiful nighttime shots, high in contrast, with pools of light backgrounding the women as they ran. It's precisely this aesthetic – a textured, analog feel – that makes the production challenges of working in 16mm worth it. It's a look only achieved through the sculptural craft of working in film.

The Film... When a college-age Iranian woman is locked out of her apartment without her headscarf, she is fully exposed on her stoop, vulnerable to hassle and all manner of social reprobation. Does a conversation with a young man who keeps her company help or hinder her situation? There is a brilliant tension here, as we hold our breath, waiting for the wind to pass. Capturing a complex cultural reality in a mere quarter of an hour, The Wind is Blowing on My Street looks at an unexpected connection in modern-day Tehran, where a simple mishap could lead to serious trouble.
The Director... Saba Riazi, speaking at the Sundance Filmmaker Youth Culture Panel: "Making films in Iran you learn to hide and do things your way. You risk a lot for filmmaking, for art, for expressing yourself." Born and raised in Tehran, she worked for several years in the film industry in Iran as an assistant editor. Saba got her start at the Tehran University of the Arts, where she studied theater directing and created short films with classmates. Now she is living in New York, currently enrolled in the M.F.A program for Film and Television Production at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

The Film... Life Model shows us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, regardless of age. When a 75-year-old nude figure model poses in an open sketch class, seeing her likeness portrayed through the artists' eyes allows her to not only accept her aging body, but also appreciate its ageless beauty. This documentary addresses some of the issues women face getting older in a youth-obsessed culture through the singular experience of someone who has come to terms with aging in a unique way.
The Director... Lori Petchers has produced and directed documentary films that have screened at numerous festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada, including the award winning short, Mezzanotte Obscura. Ms. Petchers is the creator of themidlifeproject.com, an online documentary project about middle age. She is a received a regional Emmy nomination for her work on the documentary The Amistad Revolt: All We Want is to Make Us Free and is currently working on Old Bags, a video installation that explores female identity and aging.

The Film... A vivid collaboration between filmmaker Andrea Dorfman and spoken word artist Tanya Davis using music, poetry and whimsical animated images to explore the state of being alone. On the surface, the film is a kind of "how-to" manual for spending time by yourself. On a deeper level, it addresses the fundamental fact that we are all alone in some way, and examines our feelings of loneliness with humor, hope and measured reflection. Made famous by Roger Ebert with almost four million views on the Internet.
The Director... Andrea Dorfman is an artist and filmmaker. Her work includes experimental and dramatic short films, two feature films, Parsley Days and Love That Boy, as well as a documentary, Sluts, released in 2005. She's currently working in animation at the National Film Board of Canada and developing her third feature film, Harmony, with screenwriter Jennifer Deyell. Andrea has also taught film and video at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and is one of four co-creators of Blowhard, a thematic storytelling series.

The Director... Marco J. Riedl's career path changed dramatically when he visited New York in early 2001. At the invitation of Michael Ballhaus, the cinematographer shooting Gangs of New York, Marco spent time on-set during the filming, gaining an inside perspective from the Hollywood veteran.
As a result, at the age of 34 he decided to pursue a career in filmmaking and in 2003 began film studies at the University of Applied Science and Arts in Dortmond. Since then Marco has worked in the film industry at production houses and film academies in Potsdam, Munich and Cologne. Quirk of Fate marks his debut as a director.
