If you are new to the British Arrows, here's the scoop on a marriage of creativity, art and commerce:

These British-made adverts and PSAs created for Television, Cinema and the Web were selected from 1,000+ entries and judged by their peers as the best of the year.

The result is an entertaining mix of British wit, drama and high production values that bring people back year after year.

The fast-paced compilation is like a series of little movies — they tell stories that engage your emotions. Without resorting to hard sell, they pull you in, taking you from funny to droll to heart-rending, with an abundance of action, romance, animals and kids.

Brands are not immediately obvious as tie-ins are typically not revealed until the final frames of each advert. Imagine the stories behind the still photos on the right — guessing the product and sponsor is part of the fun of watching !

Many thanks to the Arrows organization in London and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for facilitating the exhibition. And congratulations to the British Arrows on their 40th year of award presentation!

The British Arrows Awards is organized by British Arrows, a London-based not-for-profit whose shareholders are companies involved with the making of commercials.

The Arrows program offers an American audience exposure to the originality, wit, and creativity of British advertising as well as showcasing the early work of film directors such as Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Hugh Hudson, and Alan Parker as they were becoming fully-fledged Hollywood directors.

The BAA program screenings have developed an influential reputation in the U.S. for creative excellence, enhanced by public and professional interest that has spawned further screenings across the country.

The awards were created in 1976 and were originally known as the London Television Advertising Awards. The purpose was to recognize and reward the best television commercials made by British advertising agencies and production companies.

As time progressed, the scope of recognition was expanded to include commercials and PSAs directed to cinema, and in recent years, to Internet marketing and ambient media/out-of-home environments.

Currently, the event attracts entry of roughly 1,000 commercials, and a similar number of people attend the presentation of awards in London each March.
