    About the Carnegie

The Otto M. Budig Theatre in the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center transports the audience to the ornate elegance of the early 1900s. Restored in 2006, improvements include comfortable seating with additional leg room, large movie screen and updated sound system. While the theatre holds 465 patrons we have limited the capacity to 350 seats on the main floor and center balcony -- to insure the best sight lines and audience experience.

And YES, there is POPCORN !!

COME EARLY to socialize before selected screenings and enjoy your favorite spirits or non-alcoholic beverage. The Carnegie opens at 6:30 before evening screenings and the cash bar is in the adjacent Gallery/reception space. The Carnegie is located at 1028 Scott Blvd., Covington KY 41011(corner of Scott and Robbins, between 10th and 11th Streets). FREE PARKING on-site and in nearby lots -- click here for the Parking Map.

    About the Global Cinema Series

Join the CWC film community this fall to experience outstanding cinema from around the world. Films that entertain, enrich and stimulate your intellect and emotions. You'll enjoy a mix of comedy, romance, drama and suspense, through the lens of other cultures, in movies you will remember long after the lights go up.

Sponsored by WVXU, 91.7 FM, the series includes newly released first-run hits like In the Loop from the UK, The Summer Hours from France, and the striking new film noir, Zift, from Bulgaria, -- all of which would otherwise bypass Cincinnati.

Plus, we have new films from the Global Film Initiative's cross-cultural 2009 Global Lens Series, which premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in New York earlier this year -- award-winning works from Brazil, China, Ecuador, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Morocco and Mozambique.

Why are these films important?    Red more...

There's nothing quite like cinema on the big screen with an audience that shares your interest and excitement! It's all happening at a great place for film, the Carnegie Arts Center in Covington, offering comfortable seating with plenty of leg room, excellent sightlines, good acoustics, social hour, cash bar, popcorn and sandwiches on Sundays, post-film discussion, free parking and easy access.

"EXTRAORDINARY. Packed to bursting with rich meaning and deep implication. The assurance and aesthetic poise of the film make it quietly ravishing...a masterpiece."
~ A.O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES

In The Summer Hours, Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling, Jerémie Rénier and Edith Scob deliver some of the most moving passages in director Olivier Assayas's entire body of work. Only the greatest filmmakers have found such a balance between the heaviness of loss and the lightness of time's passage. Every moment of this wonderful film is imbued with sadness, and joy; despair, and illumination.

Moroccan actor-director Bensaîdi's sexy, stylish, and gleefully hip film is set in a modern-day Casablanca that is inextricably caught up in a "worldwide web" of associations and consequences.

Kenza, a tough female traffic cop, begins an unlikely love affair with the stony-eyed contract killer Kamel. But when a young internet hacker happens upon Kamel's web-based enterprise, tragedy befalls the ill-fated lovers.

Short of funds and constantly menaced by her pimp, she convinces a reluctant, elderly portrait photographer to rent her a room so she can start a new life.

The growing bond between them forms the basis of a touching human drama infused with gentle humor, rich with the palpable texture of daily life.

    Mozambique   SLEEPWALKING LAND   Drama
       Sunday Nov 29, 4:00
Director Teresa Prata, 2007, Mozambique, 97 min, in Portuguese, English subtitles. [NR]

In the midst of Mozambique's devastating civil war, Muidinga, an orphaned refugee, wanders the countryside in search of his mother. His only companion is an elderly storyteller, and the only guide to finding his mother is a dead man's diary.

Together, the storyteller and diary lead him on a magical, and sometimes macabre, journey across war-torn landscapes to find the family he lost. Based on Mia Coutou's acclaimed Portuguese novel of the same name, Teresa Prata's transporting drama underscores the power of imagination, compassion and resilience in surviving, and ultimately overcoming, the catastrophe of war.

    About the GFI

    GFI   GFI

The Global Film Initiative was created to promote cross-cultural understanding through the medium of cinema. Although American film continues to thrive in the global marketplace, developing world filmmaking has suffered from shifting economic conditions in film financing and distribution. As a result, audiences in the United States have been denied the rich cultural lessons these films have to offer. Through four primary programs - funding, acquisition, distribution and education - the GFI has taken active steps to insure that world cinema will survive and have a place in American film programming.
